History of the Department of Ophthalmology

Resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars KASSR № 858/29 of 10/21/33, was established by the Regional Ophthalmic Research Institute, practical, and in November 1934 the following was discovered in the Department of Ophthalmology Medical Institute. The first head of the Department of Ophthalmology for 35 years was a professor V.P.Roschin (1934-1969)

For the first time in Kazakhstan, the problem of brucellosis in the organ of vision engaged Professor VP Roshchin («Brucellosis and the authority of» Alma-Ata, 1951). The study of pathogenic forms of ocular manifestations of brucellosis, who took in those years, for Kazakhstan the nature of the boundary value of the epidemic, ended a successful defense of theses.

The successful establishment of ophthalmic services in Kazakhstan was interrupted by World War II. From the earliest days of the war leading specialists — assistants A.V.Ilchenko, L.D.Mitskevich, L.D.Tsipenyuk went to the front. Working in hospitals of the army, they made some valuable suggestions for emergency assistance if an eye injury wartime and surgical care in the rehabilitation of disabled veterans. The proposed by L.D.Mitskevichem surgeries, published in the fundamental work experience of the Great Patriotic War, are still required components of a successful surgical treatment of eye injuries.

The post-war period of the Institute of Ophthalmology, and Kazakhstan is characterized by systematic attack on trachoma. With the introduction of the practice of scientific research team of the department and institution. organization encompassing a population of medical personnel, trachoma in Kazakhstan in the mid 60’s was eliminated.

Under the guidance of prof. V.P.Roschin were 3 doctoral and 14 master’s theses, he published over 100 scientific papers, a monograph. For his work he was awarded the Order of Lenin, Order of Red Banner of Labor, Honor, medals, diplomas of the Presidium of the Supreme Council, he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Scientist of the Kazakh SSR.

From 1970 to 1988, chair of Ophthalmology and also director of the Institute was Professor G.A.Uldanov. Under his leadership paid great attention to the organization of ophthalmic services. In the beginning of 1974 he conducted revolutionary introduction of microsurgical treatment in ophthalmology, ophthalmic equipment of all regional centers. The primary objective of this action was the preparation of microsurgery in the Republic, which was carried out according to the order № 145 of the USSR Ministry of Health. After training the first micro surgeons in Moscow, he organized similar cycles in a Research Institute of Eye Diseases. One of the most important for the development of microsurgical treatment was to organize the service of conservation of donor tissue.

Under the guidance of prof. G.A.Uldanov held a congress of ophthalmologists and two in Kazakhstan and a congress of ophthalmologists in Central Asia and Kazakhstan, with the assistance of eminent scientists of the USSR ophthalmologists.

Under the guidance of prof. G.A.Uldanov been protected for more than 25 candidates and two doctoral dissertations, published over 200 scientific papers, including two monographs. G.A.Uldanov was the editor of 10 collections of scientific works of the Institute, chairman of the Society of Ophthalmologists of Kazakhstan and Deputy Chairman of the All-Union Society of Ophthalmologists. He was awarded the «Friendship» medal for valiant labor during the Second World War, diplomas of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.

In the period from 1989 to 1995, Department was in charge of Professor T.G.Utelbaev. A student of Professor G.A.Uldanov, he was among the first in the department he worked in the Republic of Yemen, an ophthalmologist in providing international aid. He co-authored by assistant department K.B.Kosherov and A.N. Dzhumatayev he wrote the first textbook of ophthalmology in the Kazakh language.

From 1995 to 2003. directs the Department, as well as both director of the institute, Professor Zh.G.Mustafina.

Under her leadership, 18 candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended. She has the initiative to open a specialized council for PhD theses, which she was chairman for several years. For her work she was awarded the Order «Badge of Honor» and «Parasat», a diploma of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR and the title of «Honorary Doctor of RK.»

From 2003 to 2009 the department was in charge of Suleyeva Baghdad Omarovna. From her student days she worked in the Kazakh Research Institute of Eye Diseases, and has grown from a junior researcher to the deputy Director of Science.

Under her leadership, nine master’s theses were protected.

Fruitful work of B.O.Suleeva repeatedly highlighted the leadership of the institute, as well as the Ministry of Health of the RK.

Over the past five years under her leadership, held seven scientific — practical conferences with international participation on various current issues of ophthalmology. The institute conducted a five master — classes’ mikrooftalmohirurgii scientists from around the world, such as Takayuki Akahoshi (Japan), Dr. Rich (USA), George Briscoe (Switzerland), Balashevich LI, Y. Takhtaev (Russia) and others who appreciated the level of training of our specialists.

In the face of the head of Kaz T.K. Botabekova Research Institute of Eye Diseases, was awarded the Gold Medal of the International Foundation «Excellence in Business Practice.»

Botabekova T.K. awarded the breastplate «Excellent worker of Health,» and in 2009 for numerous health care services to the domestic government won an important award — the Order «Parasat.»
